ABOUT THE ROLE

As the Head of Legal at Aaru, you will own the full legal stack and serve as a senior partner to the founders and operational leads on the most consequential decisions the company makes. Aaru's commercial structures and agreements are, in many cases, without precedent and occupy the intersection of artificial intelligence and enterprise software across international jurisdictions and regulatory frameworks. You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to execute across legal, risk, compliance, governance, fundraising, intellectual property / patent and other priorities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Build and scale Aaru's legal, risk and governance functions with company-wide impact

• Structure, negotiate and review bespoke cross-jurisdictional enterprise and government agreements

• Monitor and interpret rapidly evolving domestic and international AI regulations, anticipating business impact and advising leadership before changes become constraints

• Build and protect Aaru's intellectual property portfolio, including patent strategy across software and AI systems

• Develop the legal infrastructure — contracts, policies, frameworks — needed to support frictionless hypergrowth

• Support fundraising rounds and manage corporate governance in close partnership with the founders

YOU MAY BE A FIT IF

• You have 7+ years of legal experience, ideally split between a leading commercial law firm and a scaling in-house legal function

• You have deep experience in public sector contracting and regulatory matters, including working directly with multi-jurisdictional frameworks

• You have a track record closing complex commercial deals and are comfortable with complex commercial structures

• You bring sharp commercial instincts and can contribute directly to business development conversations, not just diligence and documentation

• You're licensed and in good standing with the bar association of at least one U.S. state

STRONG CANDIDATES MAY ALSO

• Have familiarity with IP and patent strategy

• Have experience building and scaling legal functions at an early-stage enterprise

• Be fluent in AI law and liability, including how existing and emerging regulatory frameworks apply to AI systems at scale

LOCATION

This role is based in New York City. Aaru is an in-person company and during this exciting period of hypergrowth, we work 6 days a week in office. Candidates are expected to be located within the New York City metropolitan area or open to relocation.
