Role Summary
We are seeking a Staff Engineer (Architect) to drive the design and scalability of AI-powered automation systems (agentic AI) that will transform billing and revenue operations for our global SaaS customers. This role is critical in shaping Chargebee’s next generation of intelligent, multi-tenant automation products.
You will report to the Senior Director of Engineering and partner closely with product, engineering managers, and cross-functional stakeholders. As a technical leader, you’ll bring architectural clarity, scale-conscious design, and thought leadership to ensure we build a robust, secure, and extensible AI automation platform that serves thousands of customers reliably.
Key Responsibilities
• Architect scalable agent platforms: Define the end‑to‑end architecture for our AI automation stack with multi-tenancy, resilience, and extensibility.
• Build AI agent capabilities: Lead architecture for MCP integration, tool orchestration, memory management, evaluation frameworks, RAG setup, async workflows, and streaming pipelines.
• Prototype & guide AI-first engineering: Deliver proof‑of‑concepts, mentor developers, and promote best practices in agent orchestration and GenAI frameworks.
• System governance & frameworks: Build reusable APIs, modular components, and guardrails to standardize and accelerate agent deployment.
• AI lifecycle & governance: Own deployment pipelines, observability, model retraining schedules, drift detection, and production resilience.
• Ethical & secure AI design: Partner with security and risk teams to ensure safe, explainable, and bias-aware agent behavior.
• Cross-functional leadership: Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Security to balance customer needs, compliance, and technical trade-offs.
Qualifications
• Experience: 10+ years in software engineering with at least 5 years in technical leadership or architect roles within SaaS / enterprise platforms.
• Domain Knowledge: Strong understanding of distributed systems, multi-tenant SaaS architecture, and cloud-native platforms (AWS).
• AI & Technical Depth: Strong expertise in Python and JavaScript for GenAI frameworks, specifically LLM orchestration, RAG workflows, agent frameworks, evaluation pipelines, async processing, and streaming. Solid foundation in object-oriented design, relational databases, and vector store technologies. Java knowledge is a helpful bonus.
• Scalability Mindset: Proven track record of architecting and scaling enterprise SaaS systems.
• Leadership Skills: Demonstrated success in influencing architectural direction, mentoring engineers, and fostering innovation.
What Makes You a Great Fit
• You’re passionate about AI-powered automation and curious about how agentic approaches can transform enterprise workflows.
• You can balance pragmatism with vision—delivering incremental value today while laying the foundation for future scale.
• You thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments and can rally teams around complex technical missions.
• You’re not just an architect—you’re a builder, a mentor, and a thought leader.
