Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated Network and Data Center engineer to join our infrastructure team. In this role, you will be the "boots on the ground," responsible for the physical installation, basic configuration, and maintenance of our network and server equipment. While situated in a data center environment, the day-to-day responsibilities are heavily focused on general hardware support rather than highly complex DC-specific architecture. This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their IT career to gain hands-on experience with enterprise-grade hardware.
Responsibilities
• Hardware Management (Core Focus): Mainly focus on changing hardware (HW) components for Network, servers and storage arrays. Responsible for regularly adding, decommissioning, and removing servers and other Infra Hardwares.
• Vendor Coordination: Guide and assist external field technicians, particularly from Dell, during on-site hardware repairs, deployments, and troubleshooting.
• Network Operations Support: Provide day-to-day operational support and administration for the enterprise network infrastructure, specifically working with Juniper devices, F5 load balancers, and Palo Alto firewalls.
• Physical Deployment: Rack, stack, and power up hardware, including Cisco and Arista switches, Fortinet firewalls, Cisco UCS M4/M5 blade servers and chassis, and NetApp 700S storage systems.
• Cabling Excellence: Perform professional-grade installation of copper and Single-Mode/Multi-Mode (SMF/MMF) fiber optic cabling. Maintain strict labeling and cable management standards. Perform cross-connect patching, polarity checks, and light testing.
• Initial Provisioning: Assist in the initial "day zero" configuration of network devices (loading OS images, basic IP assignment, and connectivity testing).
• Troubleshooting & Support: Act as the first line of defense for Layer 1 and Layer 2 issues (bad cables, port errors, transceiver failures). Conduct link verification, management port troubleshooting, and troubleshoot light levels for optics.
• Monitoring & Health Checks: Use enterprise tools to monitor hardware health. Proactively identify and report hardware alarms, and assist with slot verification and health checks on server chassis.
• Maintenance: Perform routine hardware swaps, including reseating blade servers (blade insertion/removal) and handling optics replacements (installing/removing SFP SR/LR optics). Assist with scheduled firmware updates during maintenance windows.
• On-Call: Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to provide hands-on support for physical hardware emergencies.
Required Qualifications
• Experience: 1–3 years of experience in IT support, helpdesk, or a hardware-focused infrastructure environment. (Internship experience is highly valued).
• Technical Foundations:
• Strong familiarity with server and storage hardware components.
• Fundamental understanding of the OSI model, specifically Layers 1 through 3.
• Basic knowledge of CLI (Command Line Interface) for Cisco, Arista, Fortinet, or similar vendors.
• Familiarity with different cable types (Cat6, SMF/MMF fiber), connector types (LC, RJ45), and proper handling of SFP SR/LR optics.
• Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field (or currently enrolled/equivalent technical training).
• Certifications: CompTIA A+, Network+, or CCNA (preferred or in-progress).
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift and safely handle equipment weighing up to 50 lbs (22 kg).
• Comfortable working in a data center environment (prolonged standing, walking, and exposure to cool temperatures/moderate noise).
• Ability to work on ladders or elevated platforms to install overhead cabling.
Our benefits include:
• Health & Wellness: Health care coverage designed for the mind and body.
• Flexible Downtime: Generous time off helps keep you energized for your time on.
• Continuous Learning: Access a wealth of resources to grow your career and learn valuable new skills.
• Invest in Your Future: Secure your financial future through competitive pay, retirement planning, a continuing education program with a company-matched student loan contribution, and financial wellness programs.
• Family Friendly Perks: It’s not just about you. OSTTRA has perks for your partners and little ones, too, with some
• best-in class benefits for families.
